Dufftown
Dufftown has built its reputation around the whisky industry – and no wonder. With no less than six working distilleries on its roll of honour, it is a natural setting for many of the Festival's events as well as for the Autumn Speyside Whisky Festival held in September each year.
The town has much to offer the visitor to Speyside including a wide range of accommodation in and around the village and there are a number of excellent restaurants to savour quality local produce. Dufftown is also home to Glenfiddich and Balvenie Distilleries and the world-class The Whisky Shop Dufftown. It’s a vibrant centre throughout the tourist season with weekly events including Stramash (a gathering of musicians), whisky nosing and tastings, and a Ceilidh (an evening of traditional song and dance). The Highland Games on the last Saturday in July each year and always features the mass pipe bands in the Town. There are also a number of events at Hogmanay making it a fabulous destination for your New Year celebrations.
The Town is steeped in history other than that associated with Whisky. It was at Mortlach (now a part of Dufftown) that King Malcolm II defeated the Danes in 1010 in an epic battle. Other sites of historic interest are The Mortlach Church, Balvenie and Auchindoun Castles, the Dufftown Clock Tower once the location of the Town Jail and the town’s association with Lord Mount Stephen, builder of the Trans-Canadian Railway.
Sport and recreation are an essential part of a visit to the area and Dufftown caters for walkers, cyclists and golfers. There is a network of waymarked paths and bridal tracks centred on the town to suit all ages and abilities. The town is also one of the gateways to the wilderness areas of upper Speyside, Glenlivet and the Cairngorm National Park. Dufftown has its own 18-hole Golf course on the edge of the town.
