A brand new musical play will take centre stage at the Speyside Whisky Festival, telling the extraordinary story of the Grants of Glen Grant—the pioneering family behind the famous Glen Grant distillery. The production will be performed at Grant Hall, Rothes, on April 30, May 1, and May 3, 2025.
Written by Rothes local, Kathleen Henderson, the play spans four acts, charting the Grants’ journey from illicit distillers and farmers in Glenlivet to founding the Glen Grant distillery in 1840, and ultimately selling it to Seagram in 1978. Adding a personal touch, one cast member, Mhorvan Sherret will portray their own father, Ernest, who was the distillery manager at the time of the sale.
Enhancing the production’s authenticity and emotional depth, the music has been specially composed by the playwright’s husband, Colin Henderson, and will also feature a performance of the tune “Glen Grant” written by the legendary fiddler James Scott Skinner.
“This is a story deeply woven into the fabric of Rothes and Speyside’s whisky heritage,” said George McNeil, Chairman of the Festival. “Bringing it to life with local talent and original music makes it even more special.”
With a blend of history, music, and drama, this production promises to be a highlight of the Spirit of Speyside Speyside Whisky Festival.
